Practical Tools
for Working with a Limited English
Proficient Patient Population
Vol. 1: Working with
an Interpreter
More than 44 million people
living in the United States speak
a language other than English at home.
Successful communication
in the triadic encounter is possible,
and there is much
the provider can do to promote a therapeutic
alliance and the
wellbeing of each patient. In this 20-minute
video presentation,
we present providers with practical tools
for working with a
Limited English Proficient (LEP) patient
population. This
information can be used to anchor, partner
and set the tone for
the interpreted clinical interview and
treatment session.

Vol. 2: The
Burned Heart. When a Provider is not Fluent
in a Patient's Language
It is not uncommon for
providers to learn a foreign language
to improve communication with patients.
However, being conversant in a foreign
language does not automatically qualify
a provider to provide patient care in
that language. In this video presentation,
a well-meaning provider attempts to interview
a Spanish-speaking patient who presents
with abdominal pain. Through this case
study, we examine the potentially dangerous
effects of false fluencies, poor grammar
and a lack of medical terminology.

Vol. 3: Please
Speak English!
This 15-minute video presentation
will explore the cultural and linguistic
divide that often exists among colleagues
in the workplace and between patients
and health care professionals in medical
settings. Through a series of vignettes
that illustrate communication barriers
between speakers of different languages
and between individuals who share a common
language but hold diverse backgrounds
and values, we will have the opportunity
to mirror common workplace behaviors
and to examine their impact on patients,
colleagues and on ourselves. We will
then compare these outcomes to a national
cultural competency model established
through current health care legislation.

Vol. 4: An Epidemic
of Misunderstandings
In any human interaction,
there are virtually unlimited possibilities
for conflict borne of misunderstanding.
This 10-minute video presentation will
explore common misunderstandings fueled
by the socioeconomic, racial and cultural
divide that often exists among colleagues
in the workplace and between patients
and health care professionals in medical
settings. Rather than focus on where
the "blame" lies, this video
shows that each of us can do our part
to prevent epidemics of misunderstanding
in the organizations in which we work
by approaching every conflict with tools
for culturally competent communication.
